Laamu Atoll Education Centre was started as a community school project in 1980. The foundation was laid on 20.10.1980, (11th Zulhaijja 1400) on Monday by the Atoll Chief Ismail Mohamed (Jambudon Ismail).Foundation area was laid on the famous Fonadhoo public coconut palm area. Officially the school was inaugurated and started functioning on 07.05.1983(24th Rajabu 1403). The school was opened by the Honorable Minister of Education Mr. Mohamed Zahir Hussain under the name of Laamu Atoll Education Centre. The documented date of beginning of the school is 27th August 1948. The first known name of the school was Makthabul Jihad. On 8th March 1984 name of the school was changed to Madhrasathul Jihad. On 26th December 2004 Maldives was hit badly by the Tsunami which began near Indonesia. Vilufushi was completely destroyed and several people from the island died during the Tsunami crisis in 2004. As a result people of Vilufushi were provided with temporary shelters in near by island, Thaa. Buruni. Since then students of Vilufushi studied in Buruni Madharusa. Read more
